In April, 2018 my son Shane took his own life. I learned that he was being bullied. He was only 11 years old! Every day for the rest of my life, I will be haunted asking myself what signs I must have missed. How could I have saved my son's life?
If this can happen to my family, it can happen to anyone. I am "that" mom. I talk to my kids. I tell them how much I love them every day. I spend quality time with them, and we make memories. I do without - so they can have. The fact of the matter is, I had absolutely no idea that Shane was in such pain. I had no warning signs. I will always be searching for answers that I know I will likely never find.
I am creating a Foundation in Shane's name that will place an emphasis on recognizing and rewarding kids who display the courage to speak up, and the bravery to do the right thing. Perhaps if someone said something, Shane would still be here - safe with me. Our motto is 'Kind is the new cool'. Because kind IS cool.
The name Shane's Imagine-Nation was born one day when I was driving home. I asked Shane if he would give me a sign that he was OK. The song 'Imagine' by John Lennon came on the radio, and after hearing the song hundreds of times, that day I actually listened to the words for the first time.
Shane's Imagine-Nation will exemplify everything that Shane represented in life, and through this unimaginable tragedy, I am committed to doing everything I can to ensure that this does not happen to anyone else. I will NOT allow Shane to be forgotten, and since he's been gone, I have created various anti-bullying programs and courses (The Anti-Bullying Brigade is available on this site - click the button below that will take you to the page). The Anti-Bullying Brigade was designed so that people can start community-wide bullying prevention programs. We cannot rely solely on the schools to address this very important issue. My dream is to see Shane's Imagine-Nation in every community throughout the country.
I know I will likely never have answers, but I will certainly do my best to find them.
I fully intend to make Shane proud, and through this, I hope to save lives. Again, thank you for caring.
"This generation of kids has the ability to have kindness and integrity be their forever footprint." - Sandy Lundy
Many schools, youth organizations and communities have worked with me because few others have first hand experience of the worst-case scenario of what bullying can do. I have worked with young kids (elementary school) through adults and large groups, and tailor every program to suit the needs of the audience I am working with. My schedule fills up very fast, so please have a few viable options available.
Strength lies in our collective action and understanding. Sandy is committed to helping create community-wide bullying prevention programs so that kids know that bullying will not be tolerated, and kindness will be recognized.
